Touwsriver Boeber Run

Sitting and writing the review for Sunday’s Boeber Run to Touwsriver, I cannot help but think of those on the streets on this cold, wet Tuesday morning – sparing a thought for our friends who have no shelter.

As promised, the event was run very differently from the usual Boeber Runs.  Our sponsors and supporters played a huge role in making this possible.

Thanks to our sponsor Protea Toyota, we headed for Touwsriver in the comfort of Toyota Quantum’s which got us there safely and in great time.

The abject poverty we in the area highlights the need for individuals and businesses alike to come to the table with ideas and projects to assist in making a difference to the lives of those most vulnerable. It also highlights the need for more self empowerment projects to be implemented in order to make these communities more self sufficient.  Here corporate entities could play a great role.

In our time in Touwsriver, we saw many kids affected by Fetal alcohol syndrome, and my initial thoughts were “what the hell are these moms thinking?”  After speaking with a couple of these moms, I learned that there aren’t many options for them.  They cannot afford further education, and employment opportunities are zero in the vicinity, so they opt for   SASSA grants.

Businesses in the area play a huge role here too, and is perhaps a remnant if the dop system.  It’s a Sunday afternoon, in a dorp with around 6800 people and  several bottle stores are open – this isn’t a Muslim saying “ban alcohol” , but a fellow human being pleading better life options for these people.  What options are you giving them when you make cheap alcohol so freely available.  It’s a endless cycle that will continue to pass down from generation to generation until we step up and work with them to break that cycle.

This post isn’t a dig at any political party,  it is about encouraging more if us to get involved.  It does not have to be with #LU4C – There are so many opportunities to help, find a way that works for you – but get involved, make a difference. We need to see a shift from only “handouts” and towards more sustainable self empowerment projects – lets teach a human to fish.

Alhumdulillah with the support from donors, and sponsors Protea Toyota, Dairy Mart, The Husami Masjid in Cravenby, regular and anonymous donors, we managed to prepare 480 litres of Soy based Breyani, 100 litres of Boeber, 500 sandwhiches, fruit and second hand clothing for our guests who were most appreciative as can be seen in this short video clip of the day’s proceedings.

One cannot express the overwhelming feeling upon receiving the gratitude, appreciation and prayers from someone who probably cannot do anything for you. Their prayers mean so much more than any gesture they could offer and is the best kind of appreciation one can get.

We also have to acknowledge the efforts that our volunteers, AKA #TheCrew, put into all of our events. From making sandwhiches, collecting and sorting clothes, running around for bread, polony, onions, tomatoes, fruit, etc. There is so much that happens in the background and we are forever grateful for your efforts. None of the successes would have been possible without the grace of the Almighty, and your work ethic.

Once again, we thank you for your support and hope that we can count on your support in future In Shaa Allah.
