We all know this story:
A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.
She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”
The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!”
The old man looked at the girl inquisitively and thought about what she had done and said. Inspired, he joined the little girl in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved.
This story rings true as we reflect on 2 years as a registered non profit company, and more than 3 years of doing the Boeber Runs. From really humble beginnings or servicing an average of 80 guests per night to and average of almost 800 guests per night.
This also rang true at the Phumlani Boeber Run which formed part of our end if year activities. Initially we were only feeding guests in the area, but we had received so many donations, we were able to visit our friends in New Horizons and also spread a little festive cheer with our guests there.
Seeing the kids’ smiles when getting their party packs, was enough to melt even the toughest of hearts. Some were lucky to vet a small toy too. The thanks given by the elderly for the hot punnet of food, fruit packet, sandwich and of course, cup of Boeber was overwhelming. They are in for a greater surprise as we have been overwhelmed with clothing donations which means over the next couple of days, the gifts will keep coming.
All of this could not have been possible with the help and support of all our supporters. Some have been making monetary contributions while others continue to roll up their sleeves and assist in any way they can. Everyone’s efforts are making a difference in peoples lives and we hope and pray that our efforts continue to grow and inspire more people to either get involved and do the same Alhamdulillah (Praise to God).
We hope and pray that our efforts are accepted and that we are able to continue to grow as we look at empowering those less vulnerable in Shaa Allah (God willing) and we hope that we can continue to count on your support.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our donors and supporters, and pray that the Almighty continue to bless each and every one of you. Ameen
