The Boeber Run was started by Irafaan ‘Fanie’ Abrahams – a Capetonian teacher who is also a passionate community man and well-known radio and TV presenter.
Building on from the inaugural Ramadaan Weekend project (June 2015), where he had partnered with Islamic Relief to distribute boeber and food to the homeless, Irafaan & friends decided to continue to put their legs to work by running miles every month in order to give others smiles. With his love for running & feeding the homeless, the project was titled the “Boeber Run”.
Boeber is a traditional Cape Malay sweet, milk drink, made with vermicelli, sago, sugar, and flavored with cardamom, stick cinnamon and rose water – usually consumed in Cape Town during the month of Ramadaan (fasting).
The monthly event sees runners, amateurs & pros, running 5 kms ,while other supporters drive along, to various locations in the greater Cape Town area where warm boeber, soup, bread, blankets and other items are handed to the homeless & less fortunate….our guests for the evening.
The Boeber, foods and other items are usually donated by friends and various community individuals, who graciously support this venture and make it possible to sustain the steady growth experienced.
One of our main focus points is not just to feed the poor, but to also interact with our guests and at the end of the evening everyone who participated should be able to share three stories about the people they have met on the streets.
The project has grown since its first week, from about 8 runners and 8 cars to as many as 40 runners on occasion and a string of cars lining up the streets.
We have also been blessed with partnerships with companies like Spice Mecca and Melomed. Spice Mecca has been a sponsor for the dry ingredients needed for the boeber we distribute. Melomed have been providing Medical Support on all of our runs. This support is not just on offer to the runners, but basic screening of Blood Pressure and Glucose testing is offered to our homeless guests.
This venture, like all Lace Up For Change projects is implemented purely for the sake of the Almighty and no other – if posts are put on social media, then this is a mere form of encouragement to others out there to join in or do similar……
We can’t help the whole world but if we can just but help one person or hear a thank you from a small child or old person, then we are on the right track.
Come join in the fun, run or not, experience the blessing of running to the aid of those less fortunate.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A man giving a dirham as sadaqah (charity) during his life is better than giving one hundred dirhams as charity at the moment of his death.”( Sunah of Abu-Dawood Hadith 2860 Narrated by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri)
